Study Summary
The MPSRC conducted this research pilot study in the pediatric urology clinic at McMaster Children’s hospital in children with non-neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction (NLUTD) and/or dysfunction elimination syndrome (DES). The purpose of this study was to assess the feasibility of group urotherapy session versus standard individual urotherapy and to evaluate the preliminary effectiveness of this modality by measuring NLUTD/DES symptoms and quality of life.
Children aged six-10 years old diagnosed with NLUTD/DES were recruited from pediatric urology clinics and randomized to receive either standard individual urotherapy or a one hour group session.
This pilot study has provided new and valuable knowledge on the child’s perception of their condition and the effect of urotherapy on their quality of life, in addition to providing new knowledge as a controlled trial comparing two urotherapy modalities.
Results showed no difference in symptom scores between patients in individual and group urotherapy sessions at baseline or follow-up. Patients in both intervention groups had significantly-improved symptoms at last follow-up, which suggests that both urotherapy modalities are effective in reducing bladder dysfunction symptoms.
Presentation of Urotherapy Results at the 2014 American Urological Association Annual Meeting
The Urotherapy trial has completed enrollment at 60 patients. The results of the Urotherapy Trial have been accepted as a moderated poster presentation at the 2014 American Urological Association Annual Meeting.
Results demonstrating the feasibility of the Urotherapy trial have previously been presented at the Canadian Urological Association 2013 Annual Meeting, as well as the 1st Annual Southlake Nurse Practitioner Research Conference in Newmarket, Ontario and the “Moving Beyond Pediatric Incontinence” workshop, hosted by the University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine Department of Continuing Education and Professional Development.

An Electronic Patient Decision Aid to Support Informed Choices for Surgical Treatment of Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia: Development and Prototype Validation - Learn More
Principle Investigator: Dr. Luis Braga
Funded By: McMaster Surgical Associate Grant, Canadian Urological Association Grant
Study Status: Ongoing – Stage 1
Study Summary
The primary objective of this study is to determine the optimal design of a patient decision aid for surgical treatment of congenital adrenal hyperplasia. This can be achieved through three stages: a persona-scenario approach (Stage 1) to inform the design of the patient decision aid (PtDA), the public and patient engagement evaluation tool (Stage 2) to evaluate the persona-scenario process and a demographic survey of the study participants (Stage 3). We are in Stage 1 of the study, in which we aim to recruit six parents and four health care providers. Parents will be purposefully selected to include those who have already considered surgical treatment and those who are considering surgical treatment. Health care providers who are involved in providing care or support to parents/families of children diagnosed with congenital adrenal hyperplasia will be selected. The study is being carried out at McMaster Children’s Hospital.

Clinical Undergraduate Research Experience (CURE)
The MPSRC is comprised of six pediatric general surgeons, one pediatric urologist and two research personnel. In addition to the clinical workload, we are also a research-oriented service. We currently have multiple active clinical trials and retrospective trials being conducted. Due to our increasing research activity, we realized the need for additional resources to help with our initiatives, which initiated the development of the CURE program. The purpose of the CURE program is to provide clinical research experience and mentorship in a hospital setting for university students to learn the research process and gain transferable skills usable in future careers, while aiding the pediatric general surgery and urology service to disseminate quality research.
CURE objectives and opportunities: The required time commitment for each volunteer is six to eight hours per week for six months. Upon completion of the six-month volunteer term, volunteers will be provided a letter of reference. We provide volunteers the opportunity to assist with scholarly works outside of their CURE program volunteer commitments.
