Urology Times of Canada Feature, Dr. Jehonathan Pinthus

Dr. Jehonathan Pinthus was featured in the July – August issue of the Urology Times of Canada for his work on Androgen Deprivation Therapy and Cardiovascular Disease.


Americas Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association North and South American Travelling Fellowship, Dr. Pablo Serrano

Dr. Pablo Serrano (general surgery) was awarded an Americas Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association North and South American Travelling Fellowship for 2014 and will be visiting Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile in Santiago. Along with gaining clinical experience, he plans to lay the groundwork for research plans and ideas that may lead to multi-national, multi-institutional clinical trials.


Surgical Foundations Research Methodology Research Award, Dr. Darren de SA & Dr. Thomas Wood & Dr. Miriam Tsao

Drs. Darren de SA and Thomas Wood (orthopaedics PGY-2) received first and second prize for the Surgical Foundations Research Methodology Research Award 2014. Dr Miriam Tsao (General Surgery PGY-2) recieved third prize. These awards are for excellence in both the PGY-1 Seminar Series and the PGY-2 Research Presentations in the Surgical Research Methodology Program.


Oncology Research Day, Dr. Mehran Anvari, Dr. Elena Parvez, Dr. Filgen Fung & Dr. Christopher Coroneos

Kathryn Chan, an electrical-biomedical engineering undergraduate student, working with Dr. Mehran Anvari, won first prize at the Oncology Research Day for her podium presentation: An Automated Robotic Platform for MRI-guided Breast Biopsy. Chan, KG; Anvari, M; Fielding, T; Bevan, PD; Chapman, T.

Dr. Elena Parvez (Dr. Peter Lovrics): A cosmesis outcome sub-study in a prospective, randomized trial comparing radioguided seed localization to wire localization for nonpalpable, invasive and in situ breast cancers

Dr. Filgen Fung (Dr. Peter Lovrics): Predictors of 5-year local, regional and distant recurrence of breast cancer in a population-based cohort in South Central Ontario

Dr. Christopher Coroneos (Dr. Ronen Avram): SIEA versus DIEP breast reconstruction: A single surgeon cohort study.


American-British-Canadian (ABC) Travelling Fellowship, Dr Michelle Ghert & Dr. Robert Lofthouse

For the first time in 50 years, on behalf of MacOrtho, McMaster University hosted the ABC (American-British-Canadian) Travelling Fellowship. Seven orthopaedic surgeons from England, Scotland, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand visited 12 North American sites to exchange research and clinical experience, as well as social activity. The fellows who visited rated their visit to McMaster a perfect score for the Top Educational Experience of the entire Fellowship. Dr. Michelle Ghert (2013) and Dr. Robert Lofthouse (1957) are McMaster ABC Travelling Fellowship Alumni.

2014 FHS Research Plenary Awards were granted to three of our Orthopaedic residents:

  • Dr. Nathan Evaniew (Surgeon Scientist Program, 2015) – FHS Graduate Student Publication and Excellence in Poster Presentation Awards
  • Dr. Moin Khan (PGY-4) – FHS Graduate Student Publication and FHS Graduate Student Diversity Awards

President’s Awards for Outstanding Service, Julia Pemberton, Sheila Sprague, Paula McKay, Kim Madden, Nicole Simunovic & Marilyn Swinton

Julia Pemberton from McMaster Pediatric Surgery Research Collaborative was awarded the Individual Award and the MacOrtho Research Coordinator Team. The team, consisting of Department of Surgery employees Sheila Sprague and Paula McKay, along with CE&B employees Kim Madden, Nicole Simunovic and Marilyn Swinton, were honored for their work with the Team Award at the President’s Awards for Outstanding Service in 2013 ceremony. The President’s Awards honour staff for outstanding contributions to the University.


American Urological Association (AUA) Research Forum Keynote Speaker, Dr. Luis Braga

Dr. Luis Braga was the American Urological Association (AUA) Research Forum Keynote Speaker for Paediatric Urology at the AUA Annual Meeting. He presented his research program in urinary tract infections in children, including the systematic review, retrospective and prospective databases and the current study – Antibiotic prophyLaxis versus Placebo in infants diagnosed with Hydronephrosis Antenatally (ALPHA): A prospective, randomized controlled trial.


Best Paper Award at the American Urology Association (AUA) Research Forum, Dr. Luis Braga

The American Urology Association presented Dr. Luis Braga and the McMaster Pediatric Surgery Research Collaborative (MPSRC) Paediatric Urology team with their conference’s Best Paper award, in May 2014, by unanimous decision, for: Braga LH, Kanters DM, Farrokyhar F, Pemberton J, Lorenzo AJ. Time to Febrile Urinary Tract Infection (fUTI) in Children with Antenatal Hydronephrosis (AHN): A Prospective Study.


Best Overall Paper at the Trauma Association of Canada’s Meeting, Dr. Tim Rice

Dr. Tim Rice (General Surgery PGY-4) and team were awarded the prize for Best Overall Paper at the Trauma Association of Canada’s meeting for the presentation: Rice TJ, Sne N, Meade M, Whitlock RP, Almenawer SA, Reddy KV, Schulmart S, Jichic D, Roberts RS, Cook DJ. A Randomized, Double-Blinded, Placebo-Controlled Pilot Trial on the Efficacy of Early Enoxaparin: The Optimal Timing of Thromboprophylaxis in Traumatic Intracranial Haemorrhage study.


Poster Prize at the American Association of Plastic Surgeons Annual General Meeting, Dr. Chris Coroneos

Dr. Chris Coroneos and the team of plastic surgery residents and faculty were awarded third prize for their poster at the American Association of Plastic Surgeons Annual General Meeting, held in Miami Beach, Florida.


Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation “For Your Eyes Only” Beneficiaries, MPSRC

McMaster Paediatric Surgery Research Collaborative was one of five research groups at Hamilton Health Sciences (HHS) that were the beneficiaries of $600,000 in fundraising through HHS Foundation “For Your Eyes Only” Gala on March 29. Specific projects that will be supported through this funding include Dr. Braga’s Antibiotic Prophylaxis versus Placebo in Infants Diagnosed with Hydronephrosis Antenatally (ALPHA): A Prospective, Randomized Controlled Trial, looking at urinary tract infections in babies, Dr. Cameron’s Disability Averted by Pediatric Surgery study in Kenya and Canada and Dr Sabri’s National SCREEN-Retinopathy of Prematurity Study.
