Training Programs

Message from Our Residency Program Director

Welcome to the McMaster orthopaedic residency training program, also known as MacOrtho. Our training program prides itself on providing an environment that fosters the growth of a world class orthopedic surgeon. By the end of the training program our graduates will all share three essential qualities:

  1. Exceptional clinicians
  2. Robust researchers
  3. Outstanding educators

These qualities serve as the pillars upon which they can build their careers and reach exceptional heights in the world of orthopaedics.

Our program welcomes residents from across Canada and abroad. We serve a large catchment area, covered by four core hospitals within the Hamilton, Ontario area. We offer training in all subspecialties in orthopedics including arthroplasty, sports, trauma, spine, foot and ankle, pediatrics and musculoskeletal oncology. Experience in all these fields can be obtained within the city itself, although partnership with our community hospitals expands this exposure even further.

While one of the larger orthopedic residency training programs in the country, MacOrtho maintains a close-knit feel. We offer a nearly one to one interaction between residents and staff. Ensuring that our learners have early access to procedures in the operating room (OR), rapid growth and autonomy, and a tremendous support structure that keeps residents feeling engaged and inspired.

MacOrtho is a cutting-edge training program. Our diverse fellowship trained faculty performs some of the most up-to-date and complex procedures in our field, all while supporting it with practice-changing evidence-based research. Some examples that highlight our forward-thinking vision include being the first program in the country to acquire a robot for use in arthroplasty surgery. We are one of the few programs to invest in virtual reality to enhance surgical education even for those rare times where the resident is not physically in the OR. We are constantly evolving our program to ensure that the education experience for our residents is second to none and our care for our patients remains world class.

Welcome to MacOrtho!
